Unused Applications
Over time, we all accumulate applications that for one reason or another are not used any more and simply take up space. Some of these applications just occupy space on the Hard Drive while others actually load parts of themselves whenever the computer boots up. To ensure that your machine is running as efficiently as possible, you should remove any applications or Windows components that you don't need or no longer use. To accomplish this, use the Add or Remove tool in your control panels.
This tool will show you how often the application is used and allows Windows to remove it safely. Most applications will have an Uninstall program built in that Windows can use to remove the program. If the program does not appear in the list, check it's program group on the Start Menu for an uninstaller. If there is none there, check the help file that came with the program or search for removal instructions on the internet.
Well Checks
These days it is more important than ever to make sure you have anti-virus and anti-spyware utilities installed on your PC's. What most user's overlook is the fact that many commercially available products have limited time subscriptions to their threat databases.
|
The way these programs work is by identifying new threats, writing the specific code to enable their program to identify those threats and then uploading that code (usually called definitions) to your computer. when the subscription runs out, so does your protection.
There are alternatives to paid subscriptions. We use and recommend Grisoft AVG and SUPERAntispyware. Both are free with free updates, highly effective and easy to use.
Optimization
There are hundreds of services that run as part of your operating system that control everything from the fonts you use to how your computer gets updates from Microsoft. Many of these services startup when the computer boots up and wait for you to make use of them. Some of these are unnecessary and waste resources, others are vital to the operation of your computer.
A qualified technician from UWS can optimize your services for you or you can request an optimization guide if you would like to attempt it yourself. |
