There are a lot of technical reasons why a PC becomes so flooded with viruses and malicious software that it becomes the processing equivalent of the average toaster. Although the geniuses at the Geek Squad would happily explain each one of these reasons, (some of them twice) in their most incoherent Geekspeak, even they can't (or won't) tell you how to fix the problems or prevent them from occurring again.
Rather than use up all of your attention answering the bigger question, let me give you a simple answer to a smaller question: How do I fix all of this?
First we need a little background on the problem in order to understand how to solve it. Internet Explorer is a web browser which was designed by Microsoft to allow web designers to control not only a user's experience when visiting web sites, but also the behavior of that user's computer. This is accomplished through the use of specific software that allows web sites to actually control your web browser.
This dubious strategy quickly led to serious security problems ranging from hijacked browsers to identity theft and crippled machines. Left un-checked, Internet Explorer will cheerfully dowload enough Spyware, Viruses and Malware to slow even the fastest machine down to a crawl in a relatively short amount of time.
